Colouring in-

a contentious debate

There is a lot of debate in world of early childhood education about colouring in sheets, their place and their purpose. While many argue that they rob children of their creativity, and give them limited scope to express themselves and their imaginations, others would argue that they teach children about boundaries, as well as providing a safe place to practice fine-motor skills, concentration as well as giving children a sense of pride and achievement in the work that they do.

Colouring books have become incredibly popular for adults, with many finding them relaxing, soothing, and a way to explore their own creative sensibilities using colour.

Regardless of what the "grown ups" say, children still love to colour pictures from pop culture. Perhaps the key is moderation, providing children with opportunities to explore their own drawing and representation skills, as well as providing them with the opportunities to engage with colouring in (if they so choose).
