What are Story Stones and why are they awesome?
Story Stones are smooth, flat stones that have images and pictures of objects or animals painted, drawn or glued on them. What I really love about Story Stones is there versatility. They can be used for a variety of experiences that encourage expressive and receptive language, memory recall, mathematical skills, as well as fostering the development of imagination and creative thinking. Story Stones can be used to retell story, as “puppets” for small world play, for sorting and sequencing activities, and as open-ended materials left in a basket for the children to explore and use as they choose.
They are very easy to make, and provide a lot of entertainment and opportunities for learning.
You will need:
Smooth, flat stones from the beach, river or a shop that sells river stones (polished ones don’t tend to hold glue well). It’s great if you have a variety of sizes and shapes to match the different images.
PVA glue or Modge Podge glue

What to do:
Wash the stones with water and a sponge. Make sure that any dirt or sediment is removed. Dry well.
Apply a thick coat of PVA Glue/Mode Podge to the centre of the stone and position the cut-out image in the centre. Smooth out any air bubbles, and make sure the edges have enough glue so that are stuck down well.
Using the paintbrush, carefully apply more glue over the image, and allow to dry (You may want to repeat this step a number of times to ensure there is a really good coat of glue over the image).
Ways to use:
Use the story book as guide to retell the story, and encourage the child/children to help act it out with the stones.
Encourage the child/children to retell the story from memory using the stones (it’s amazing how much of the story they will recall, including key parts of dialogue).
Sequencing what happened first, second, third etc with numbers
Sequencing using First/Then/Next/Last
Encourage the child/children to create own stories using the stones. If the child finds this a little challenging initially, adults can provide prompts such as “Who is the story about?” “What do they do?” “What happened next?”
Classifying games; size, animal/not an animal, colours etc
